Iran launches 1st satellite complex

Iran's first domestic aerospace and satellite complex has been inaugurated in a ceremony attended by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

President Ahmadinejad, who was accompanied by Minister of Defense and Armed Forces Logistics Mohammad Najjar, visited the ground station and the satellite launch pad at the complex, located in Iran Electronics Industries Co. (Sa-Iran), Tehran.

In an address to the ceremony, Ahmadinejad pronounced the presence of Iran in space as a necessity, describing the country's first steps in this path as strong, precise and wise.

The 'Omid Satellite' is an advanced scientific research satellite which was exclusively designed and made by Iranian scientists.

The project took 10 years for Iranian experts to accomplish and the satellite itself is designed to function in a low earth orbit system.

In February 2007, Iran joined the international space-faring community when it successfully tested a rocket that went into space as part of its drive to launch five satellites into orbit by 2010.
